Academic & PhD Research Intern
For PhD candidates, graduate researchers, and student builders working on foundation models, compilers, cryptography, or autonomous agents. Includes free compute & API credits and full access to Hanzo Team for your research.
About the Role
Hanzo hosts PhD candidates, graduate students, and academic researchers for research internships and fellowships year-round. You will work directly with our research and systems teams on frontier foundation models (Zen, Kai, Enso), high-throughput inference compilers, zero-knowledge ML, and agent infrastructure — with free API & GPU compute credits, full access to Hanzo Team for your lab or research group, and open-access publication under your own name.
Hanzo builds an open AI cloud — compilers, models, distributed infrastructure, and agent tooling. Our codebases are predominantly open source, and team members operate with high autonomy and end-to-end ownership.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct original research on foundation model architectures, RLHF/RLAIF post-training, agentic reasoning, or inference compilers.
Run large-scale experiments using complimentary Hanzo Cloud GPU clusters, API credits, and Hanzo Team workspaces.
Publish open-source weights, reproducible benchmarks, and peer-reviewed papers at top venues (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, OSDI, SOSP).
Collaborate directly with Hanzo researchers and engineers to ship research into production open-source repositories.
What We're Looking For
Currently pursuing a PhD, Master's, or exceptional undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Physics, Mathematics, or a related field.
Strong implementation skills in Python, PyTorch, Rust, C++, or Go.
Track record of open-source contributions, preprints, or systems projects.
Nice to Have
First-author publications or preprints in machine learning, compilers, cryptography, or distributed systems.
Active contributions to Hanzo open-source repositories or the broader open AI ecosystem.
